Press Quotes

First thing's first: In my opinion, this band was the best act of this year's [North by NorthEast] festival. They rocked the Rivoli with ceaseless energy, unmatched talent and intellectual lyrics, winning themselves a room full of fans on their first-ever trip to Canada. If they don't get some serious attention, something's wrong.
- ChartAttack.com follow this link for the full review

Artist's Cafe' Specials The Booda Velvets January 18 to February 18. As one of the hottest bands of New York City The Booda Velvets are a must see! They are a band to watch, selling out their self title debut album.
- RealNetRadio.com

This band [The Booda Velvets] brings you a very hard driving, Modern Rock song with screaming guitars and passionate singing.
- Mp3.com The Booda Velvets in the Artist Spotlight with Featured Song of the Day "Cassius Clay"

Their all too rare combination of musical talent and the ability to infuse their songs with powerful dynamics and melody makes The Booda Velvets one of the best new bands I’ve heard in a long time, and their self-titled CD an unequivocal success.
- Mike Fortier, Showcase Magazine

As always at the Wilmington Exchange Festival, it was out of the fat and into the fire; after skanking to Take 5, it was time to groove hearty to Djoliba … Everybody got nice and sweaty dancing to this group's funky African groove, which left me a little nervous about The Booda Velvets, on next … this was a high-energy night. Not to worry. The guys came out firing on all cylinders and had the W.E. Festers in the palm of their hands from the first song, as Dan Cromie's golden Irish tenor wailed through the band's most aggressive polychromatic rockers.
- Jim Testa, The Jersey Beat

The last band to play [at the Wilmington Exchange Festival] was New York City’s Booda Velvets, who were perhaps the most straight forward rock band to play the entire event. Don’t let that detract you, however, as The Booda Velvets laid down some serious rawk that was power packed and highly melodious. Stinging riffs, dramatic songwriting and cool vocals really worked the already drained crowd and ended the show with some real rock n’ roll power.
- Eric Walls, Faze 3 Magazine

Spontaneous, comical, and a real appreciation for the aesthetics rock n roll produces, genres this hot new band who hails themselves as The Booda Velvets!  Their self-titled, debut album musically illustrates the bands love for creative composition. The “toppers” on the album, namely Hydraulic, Provo’s Lament, and Traitor Lamb, spark a flavor for the innovation they visualize. Hydraulic, the first cut off the album, compounds sweeping harmonies from leadman Dan Cromie and potent bass lines into a melodious “Top 40” assembly.  Provo’s Lament purges dominant drum beats of Jonathan Yang and colorful vocal collections with the thrashing guitar sensibility of guitarist, Adam Wolfe Lerner, into a savage demonstration of hard, distortion-rock. Traitor Lamb makes known the craftsmanship of bassist, Jamie Balling, as he draws notes into his orchestration of vigorous prose. Dan Cromie, Jonathan Yang, Jamie Balling, and Adam Wolfe Lerner translate themselves as lively, sharp, and lax-a-dazey blue-collars in persona.  On stage, they exhibit the characteristics and crackerjack of a dexterous young group.  Comparative big names show The Booda Velvets no justice!  Composing, living, and orchestrating in a niche of their own is going to press this young band to the crown!
- Joe Louf (DJ H2H), WRBB 104.9FM Boston

Squeeze was one of the headliners [at the Guinness Fleadh Festival], on a bill that included Irish performers and others, including a local band, called The Booda Velvets, making its festival debut.
- Rebecca Spitz, NY 1 News

New York band The Booda Velvets share their "epic" sound with hosts Mike and Melissa. Think Rush meets Tommy-era Who. Particularly appealing is singer Dan Cromie's amazing set of vocal pipes.
- J'Open Mike

The Booda Velvets, a New York City-based modern rock band, have won the Guinness Fleadh Battle of the Bands. More than 150 bands from New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Connecticut participated in the competition. The Booda Velvets will participate in this year's Guinness Fleadh Festival, playing at Downing Stadium on Randalls Island on Saturday, June 13, at approximately 3 p.m. Other acts participating in the festival include: Sinead O'Connor, Tracy Chapman, The Chieftains, Chumbawumba and Patti Smith.
- Irish Echo

The drummer is excellent, the bass player is excellent, the guitarist is excellent and their singer, well, you get the idea. The set was very together and many times, set the audience up for a shock during more powerful moments. Strong songs give [The Booda Velvets’] live performance everything it should be.
- Chris Rocco, INDIE Magazine

BoodaRep Program

Posted by admin on 31st March 2009 in Blog

We're basically looking for people who dig our music and want to help us spread the word of The Booda Velvets. That's the main thing. We're based in New York City and that's where we're playing most of our shows. Our current out-of- town gigs include hitting Boston, Syracuse, Rochester and Philadelphia. We have been as far north as Maine and as far south as North Carolina and Virginia. We hope to be more touring in the near future.

For now we're looking for Booda Reps to help us with the following:

• telling people about the band
• bringing folks out to our live shows
• starting an e-mail chain to do so
• helping us with promotions (postering, flyers, phone calls)
• helping to disseminate Booda Velvets recordings

Perks/Incentives:
Since we as band are not making the big $$$ yet, we cannot pay you, however we'd like to make this worthwhile in some manner and hopefully fun for you b/c we're all about having fun.

We'd be able to provide you with the following:
- Free entrance to most Booda Velvets shows/parties/events (we're going to make laminate Booda Velvets passes for our reps to get into shows)
- First to receive the latest BV recordings
- Free BV merchandise when we get that going
- Other stuff when we think of it.

Anyhow, this is the scoop. It's kind of a grassroots thang involving our friends and people who dig the music and want to get the word out. To sign up, send an email to the link below:

With a blend of lush distorted guitars, melodic vocals, and layered soundscapes, The Booda Velvets craft songs that are passionate and intelligent. Their music explores dynamics ranging from intense and visceral to dreamy and serene, with an undercurrent of pop sensibility that occasionally rises to the surface.

The Booda Velvets are known for delivering emotionally-charged performances that explore a diverse musical spectrum. "Our collective influences are all over the place, from folk and early punk to new wave and hip hop," explains lead singer Dan Cromie. "So our songs end up painting a broad musical spectrum. It lets us take our audience with us on more of an emotional journey than just going to see a rock show." Drawing upon varied roots, The Booda Velvets’ collaborative songwriting has evolved to create a unique sound that combines strong melodies, evocative lyrics, captivating guitars and solid grooves.

The Booda Velvets continue to create a buzz while touring throughout the Northeast. They took the NXNE Festival in Toronto by storm when they played to a packed house, garnered critical success and were touted as "the best act of this year’s festival" by Chart Magazine. The band also performed at the Philadelphia Music Conference 2000 and their songs were featured on the conference’s CD compilation and website. In addition, they have showcased at the 1999 and 1998 CMJ Music Marathons, and were selected from among hundreds of bands as the winner of the 1998 Guinness Fleadh Band Search. With their single "Cassius Clay", The Booda Velvets were the focus of an Artist Spotlight on MP3.com, the industry’s premier website for mp3 files.

Lead singer Dan Cromie, bassist Jamie Balling and drummer Jonathan Yang originally met at school in Philadelphia. Shortly after moving to New York City, they found guitarist Adam Wolfe Lerner through a bizarre ad in the Village Voice. Ever since, The Booda Velvets have been playing electric and acoustic shows throughout the East Coast, including such notable NYC venues as The Mercury Lounge, Arlene Grocery and The Knitting Factory. Their self-titled EP, co-produced and engineered by Doug Henderson (Firewater, Cop Shoot Cop, Orange 9MM), recently sold out at local NYC record stores, adding further evidence to their rising popularity.
