Bed covers for trucks or also popularly known as tonneau covers are accessories attached to the cargo area of the truck. From the name itself, the purpose of tonneau covers is to provide coverage for the cargo bed of your pickup truck. It helps protect the cargo bay from nature’s elements like snow, hail, rain and extreme heat while travelling. It also helps protect your cargo and keep your things hidden from outsiders.

Installing a tonneau cover on your truck bed can really bring great benefits, which is why you should take good care of it. For you to properly care for something, you first need to know what it is made of and how it works. Since we have already established the purpose of a tonneau cover, we will now get to know the types of material it is made of.

A tonneau cover is basically made either of fiber glass, vinyl or hard plastic like Extang tonneau covers. You will see different types of materials used depending on the design of the cover. For example, hard type tonneau covers are made of fiber glass while the soft and flexible types are made of vinyl or synthetic leather.

To properly take care of your truck bed cover, you need to remember these tips. First reminder is to never allow any object to be placed on top of a tonneau cover. Do not allow kids or pets to play on top of the cover since it will not be able to hold this much weight and might break. The purpose of this accessory is to provide coverage to your cargo bay and not as something you can use as a platform or table. Another is to never let dirt, debris or snow to settle on top of the cover. Once you observe debris piling up, immediately remove this.

When cleaning an extang truck bed cover, observe proper cleaning practices. Wash the cover with a soft liquid detergent. It is not recommended to use powdered detergent because it will leave behind soap suds that will settle on your cover when not rinsed well. Dried soap suds will ruin your cover finish and therefore it will look worn out and old. Next tip for proper cleaning practice would be to use a soft cloth when washing the cover. This is to avoid abrasive substances to scratch the surface of the cover. If the cover is scratched, dirt will now easily cling to it and will be much harder to remove.
